“Fantastics Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” the second installment in the proposed five-film spin-off of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series, is the first film based in Rowling’s Wizarding World to disappoint. The film isn’t without its charms, but they become lost in a sea of exposition.

Set in 1927, “Crimes of Grindelwald” takes place approximately 70 years before the events of the seven “Harry Potter” books (and eight films), and focuses on Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a wizard who has written a book about the world’s fantastic creatures. Newt has reluctantly become embroiled in the fight against Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), a dark wizard who desires to rule over both the wizarding and non-wizarding world.
