“Thor: Ragnarok,” the third “Thor” film and the 17th film in the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe, opens Nov. 3. I have yet to see it, but it is one of my most eagerly anticipated films of the year. Casual viewers of the Marvel film franchise must be thinking, how is that possible? Shouldn’t these films be purely formula at this point? The third “Thor” film is certainly of a piece with its predecessors, but it also looks completely insane and unashamedly fun in the best possible way.
The film is directed by Taika Waititi, a New Zealander who has made quirky comedies such as “What We Do in the Shadows,” a mockumentary about vampires. A lot of times when offbeat filmmakers become attached to a blockbuster film they are little more than a director for hire and none of their personality makes into the final product. That does not seem to be the case with “Thor: Ragnarok.”
