The final days of August brought iconic late summer weather, and a quality of light witnessed only at this time of year. The skies have been clear blue, the air soft and late afternoons drop dead gorgeous. Yet the seasons are clearly in transition marked by chilly morning temperatures and light that ends earlier by the day. Dusk arrives at 7, and full dark by 8.
Labor Day is a turning point in the gardening year, when summer’s work gives way to fall chores. The harvest is at floodtide, tomatoes, corn, herbs and cabbages, with potatoes to be dug and onions to pull. The follow up to that task has been sowing cover crops in anticipation of fall rains.
