Finally the deep heat has abated, that string of sweltering 80-plus degree days. In its place arrived a bit of classic clear, sunny August weather, as we once knew it. The final weeks of the month appear to be poised to deliver more 70 degree days, intermittent rain and the full Sturgeon Moon on the 19 th . It is also a blue moon, the second full moon of a calendar month, with September’s Harvest moon a short four weeks away.

Time careens along, but the summer’s intense heat is seared in memory. The numbers confirm that yes, the season has been intensely hot. According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, whose historical data goes back 175 years, 2024 will definitely be one of the five hottest on record. In July, the global temperature was 2.18 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th century average of 60.4 degrees.
