Points North-Howard Frank Mosher

"Points North," a collection of short stories, is the final book by Howard Frank Mosher. (COURTESY PHOTO)

I first heard of Howard Frank Mosher in the early 1990s. I was covering a trial for this newspaper at the Coos County Courthouse in Lancaster and, during a recess, I fell into conversation with a woman about the book she was reading, which turned out to be Mosher's "A Stranger in the Kingdom."

She praised it as a compelling mystery and a faithful portrait of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, the edge of which lay about a mile from where we stood. She finished it before the proceedings ended, and gave it to me as we left the building.
