JACKSON — If you were anything like me as a child, you probably wanted to grow up to be a firefighter. In fact, my first car was a Fire Chief pedal car complete with a ladder and a bell. I really wanted a red light and siren; the siren did come later on the handlebars of my tricycle.
Why do I remember all this? Well, when you’re a child in a small town like Jackson, the fire department takes on an oversized sense of importance. There’s something about the red trucks and red lights and whirring sirens and all those hoses and ladders that captivates kids of all ages. It’s no wonder that we still include emergency vehicles of all stripes in our parades.
