CONWAY — Peter Ames, the career leader in victories for Kennett High athletics announced this week that this season will be the last at the helm of the varsity softball program. Over the course of 32 years, Ames guided the Eagles to four state championships, six title games, while compiling a record of 454-219.
Ames, a 1972 Kennett graduate, also led the KHS girls’ basketball to its second state championship in 2010, culminating more than a decade as the head coach of that program. He was also an assistant coach for the Kennett football team with Gary Millen and Phil Haynes, where he was a part of five of the program’s six state titles. Ames also holds the record for most junior varsity wins, having guided the baseball team prior to taking over the softball program in 1986.
