Last Saturday, we took a trek over to Waterville Valley to run the Black Bear Half Marathon. A challenging course took us over roads, Nordic ski trails, single and double track, and bike trails, and made for a fun event.

There were 72 finishers in the half-marathon and 69 finishers in the 5K, and I’m not sure how many in the Bear Cub Fun Run. The race was resurrected by Fresh Tracks Racing with the help of and proceeds going to Waterville Valley Elementary School PTA. I didn’t even know Waterville had a school!

Next on the Waterville Race Calendar is the 2019 U.S. Mountain Running Championships on Sept. 29. A 7-mile race up and down the mountain is on tap, and the race is brought to you by Acidotic Racing.

New White Mountain Miler Member and teacher at Kennett Middle School, Corey Dowe, is looking to make the team this year. Hot off breaking the course record at the Kennett Challenge, Corey placed sixth in 2017 at the Championships at Cranmore and hopes to be in the running this year.

A big shout out to Andrew Drummond of Run the Whites for his finish in the Ultra Tour du Mont Blanc. The 105- or 106-mile race (distance depends upon which map you look at) starts in Chamonix, France, and winds through Italy, Switzerland and finishes back in Chamonix. I’ve hiked the TMB in 10 days. Andrew ran and finished in 33 hours, 2 minutes, 26 seconds. Congratulations Andrew.

Next mountain runner is Dave McDermott, who is headed to Italy to run in the Tour de Geants with a start on Sept. 8. The 330-km or 205.052-mile race starts in Courmayeur, France, passes through Italy and must be finished in 150 hours. The lowest elevation is 985 feet and the highest is 1,080 feet. The total elevation gain is about 7,8700 feet. Good luck, Dave!

There are seven teams vying for the Millen Cup at the New Millen 4x400 Relay on Friday, Sept. 13 at around 7:45 p.m. The new Millen 4x400 relay will be held at the Livingston Oval during half-time of the first Kennett High School Home Game. Teams will be co-ed, two men and two women per team.

The coveted Millen Cup is at stake and this should be a lot of fun to watch. If you have any questions, contact Terry Ballou at

I had the distinct pleasure of working on cleanup crew with Meg Simone and my daughter, Sara Holtby, at the new Core Community Fitness.

Board members and friends are working hard to open this fall. You will see some familiar workout weights, machines, signs and faces at Core. The new gym is still looking for help with moving equipment from Cranmore into the new space on East Conway Road on Saturday, Sept. 7.

The White Mountain Miler Half Marathon, Half-of-the-Half, Half Marathon Relay, and 5K, is set to run on Sept. 21. There is still time to sign up for any of the race distances, but if you’re not running, please consider volunteering for this town-wide event. All proceeds from the race go to the White Mountain Miler Scholarship Fund. Check out info at or contact to volunteer.

Remember, the White Mountain Milers Trash Queen, Catherine Kyle, is asking for your help on Wednesday, Sept. 11, for the next trash pick-up day on the Milers' adopted roadway. Meet in the First Bridge Parking Lot for your assignment and to receive your trash bags and gloves. Breakfast at Stairway Cafe to follow. A

lso, Queen Catherine states she is “ready to become Queen Emeritus” and her throne and crown, perfect for a new king or queen, are up for grabs. Please think about taking on this project.

In addition to this project, I would like to challenge runners and walkers of the Mount Washington Valley to “Clean a Mile" through Oct. 1. We all see trash on our daily outings. We have our favorite routes for exercise or maybe you drive a route that could use some work.

I challenge you to take one mile and clean up the road or trail. You will be responsible for taking care of said trash. Send me a photo of the trash you find. Let me know how you felt doing this; emotionally and physically. I’ll post photos on Facebook and in my column as allowed and you’ll get a full body workout and receive thanks from me and the valley and the environment for making this an even more beautiful area.
