Almost a year ago, I wrote about Ford’s new small EV pickup based on their (according to CEO Jim Farley), revolutionary Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Despite the tepid response from consumers toward EVs in the U.S. and Ford’s embrace of internal combustion, even going so far as offering bigger base gas engines and expanding V8 offerings in their latest truck and SUV lines, they’re charging (sorry) ahead with a new small EV pickup. Farley called their universal production system a “Model T” moment for Ford.
Recently released information from Ford rejected the popular notion that we’d see a rebirth of the Ranchero nameplate in favor of calling the little truck the Fathom. Insiders hinted that the original car-based pickup’s name, Ranchero, and for years Chevy’s chief El Camino competitor, would make a comeback. Along those lines, some enthusiasts thought the Maverick would be better named the Currier, after Ford’s first small Mazda-based pickup from the 1970s, before the in-house-designed and built Ranger took over that spot.
