Safety is always a consideration in the winter mountains. With the number of accidents this winter so far, it feels like a good time to go over a few things. They may seem obvious to some but can be overlooked by many. Also this is a personal ramble. Others hikers can write their own, and perhaps do better.

One of the most important things to do before a hike is leave your itinerary and estimated time back down with a spotter.
