The literature of the White Mountains, including natural history books, is vast. Rarely is a new book as groundbreaking as Michael Whittemore’s “Ecology of the New Hampshire’s 4000 Footers — A Natural History Trail Guide to the White Mountains and the Science that Shaped our Understanding,” with a foreword by local naturalist David Govatski.
An old spiritual saying is: when you are ready for a teacher, he will appear. This could well be said of this book, when hiker numbers are expanding exponentially, and at the same time the protection of the mountains into the future requires knowledge and appreciation of how mountain ecology works, by both professionals and the hiking public. How will we treat the mountains?
