North Country Angler - ice fishing gear

Area tackle shops can get on the ice inexpensively for a day on the water. (STEVE ANGERS PHOTO)

Hunters and anglers have long led the call for the conservation of our fish and wildlife. These users pay an excise tax on all the hunting and fishing equipment they purchase. The money is collected and then redistributed back to the states for use in programs that protect and propagate fish and wildlife.

To continue this successful program, new end users must be recruited to these sports. One of the methods developed over the years is to hold free fishing days. New Hampshire has two free fishing days per year. One day in June for the open-water anglers and one day in January for the hardwater anglers
