If you are an ice-fishing aficionado or have always wondered what ice fishing is all about, circle Feb. 1 on your calendar. The fourth annual Freedom Ice Fishing Derby takes place that day. This derby is hosted by the Freedom Firefighters Association and is their big fundraiser for the year.

We decided to scope out Loon Lake in advance of the derby. Waters that are new to us we like to check prior to our actual fishing. We started by perusing the bathymetry map for Loon Lake on the N.H. Fish and Game website. Loon Lake has a variety of habitats from shallower waters, ideal for pickerel, to the deeper waters, ideal for trout and smallmouth bass.
