Today, Jan. 17, is one of the two free fishing days in New Hampshire. It is an opportunity for those who wonder what angling is all about to try the sport without having to purchase a fishing license. This is available to all anglers, including both residents and non-residents, and the free fishing day is typically held over the long weekend.
Of course, the opportunity to fish is during the hardwater season. This brings several additional opportunities to have a family outing on the ice. With the recent thaw in January, many waterbodies are now open to ice skating. Setting up a propane stove or grill on the ice and cooking up the freshest fish is another memory builder. There is nothing better than fresh caught yellow perch cooked on the grill, flaked off the bone, and rolled up in a tortilla with salsa, fresh lime and cilantro. Some add cheese. This, combined with a hot beverage, is pure nirvana.
