To the editor:I would like to invite my fellow residents of the Mount Washington Valley to tune in to C-SPAN's live simulcast each evening of The National -- the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting) evening news program. If you've been watching American news coverage, you might not recognize "Operation Iraqi Freedom." It is portrayed, by our good friends to the north, who don't generally aim to be offensive or provocative, as the American (and nominally British) invasion of Iraq. They also offer, unavoidably, a critique of American media coverage -- and they're not impressed with their American colleagues. Further afield, a BBC (broadcasts accessible online) radio commentator suggested that to describe reporters as "embedded with military units" sounded awfully close to "in bed with military units" -- and the quality of their reporting reinforced the confusion. Regardless of one's personal feelings about this military action, I highly recommend at least occasionally seeking sources of information outside corporate America -- it may help gain some sense of how the rest of the world is viewing the invasion, and how they view us.
