Bear warning

There have been a number of bear sightings in the Mount Washington Valley in recent weeks, including break-ins of cars and a home in Jackson. Last week, a New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officer was forced to euthanize a bear after it broke into a home on Wildflower Lane in Jackson. Fish and Game officials say shooting the bear was necessary because once it entered a house it became a public safety risk. Fish and Game officers and concerned individuals are working to educate the public about living in areas with bears, such as not deliberately or accidentally feeding them, so as to “minimize the number of bears killed as the result of human-caused problems.”

This week’s Tele-Talk question: Is there more that can be done to prevent conflicts between humans and bears?

I say keep having educational discussions throughout the valley and perhaps simply posting "Please don't feed the bears" in spotted areas where they are sure to feed. Bears can't read but people can. Patty Tamworth
