To the editor:Is it equitable for you to pay your property taxes, and other people's as well? Most towns have both rich and poor people as well as plenty in the middle? Is it fair to require that everyone in one town subsidizes the education costs of those in another, regardless of the person's ability to pay? Is it fair that many of our wealthiest residents do not pay much more in taxes than their less fortunate neighbors? That's the present arrangement in New Hampshire.Don't get me wrong of course I favor adequate funding of education. Mediocre or inadequate education will cost us far more over the long run. Quite soon, our children and grandchildren will be our doctors, musicians, electricians, firemen, and our local and national leaders. Support education in a fair and equitable way not in ways that permit a receiver town to make lavish improvements in school buildings while a donor town struggles to provide proper building maintenance.Susan Bruce, Doug Hjelmstead, and Jerry Sorlucco Democrats running for positions in the New Hampshire House and Senate favor reduced reliance on the property tax and a more equitable, progressive system of taxation. And the Republicans? Under their watchful eyes, we now have a $40 million dollar deficit. And they have controlled the N.H. legislature since 1857. It's time for a change.
