To the editor:

In Mark Hounsell’s Sept. 6 column titled “Education matters, Round Two,” he stated that “Every student promoted from the sixth grade should have an understanding that this nation was built on the rugged determination of the men and women who were motivated by Judeo-Christian faith.”

This being the 400th anniversary of the first slaves sold in North America, I would state: “Every student promoted from the sixth grade should have an understanding that this nation was built on the backs of slaves and the ramifications of this evil are still being felt.”
