Twenty years ago, I turned off my television in utter disgust with Republicans as they tried to twist Bill Clinton’s private personal conduct into an excuse to scuttle the policies for which the American people elected him. Except for a few minutes in September of 2001 I never turned my television back on. I suppose I should be grateful to that impeachment carnival for ending so intellectually stultifying a habit.

Now it’s the Democrats who have earned my scorn by embracing the vicious politics of personal destruction. At least in 1998 we knew that some sort of illicit activity had taken place, but even such renowned feminists as Gloria Steinem defended Clinton’s seduction of a star-struck intern as a minor, forgivable, politically irrelevant offense.
