BARTLETT — How important are sports at the middle-school level?

The Bartlett School Board’s decision last month to no longer continue a contract with the Conway School Board to allow seventh- and eighth-graders to head to Kennett Middle School to play sports not offered in Bartlett drew parents and students to the board's Feb. 3 meeting who would like to see those opportunities continue.

it is sad that a majority of the Barlett School Board do not understand the value of athletics to students. it is often said, athletics is an extension of the classroom. so which is it, the $7,000 of the loss of classroom time? The District can create a policy for those students whose grades need improvement.

i encourage the Board to read the book by former Londonderry Superintendent "game plan" before finalizing this vote Why is it that the most of the elite school all require athletic participation? And why is it all the military school require participation in athletics? and, what happened to parental choice? i can identify many students who needed sports to stay in school, it kept them focused.

keep the athletic program and allow the kids to experience the thrill of victory. Remember, the friendships created by sports last a lifetime.
