The times they keep gettin’ crazier. But no matter how wild it gets, we must remain clear sighted about our foundational freedoms. And that among these are the freedom of press, speech, expression and assembly — my sacred right to be an annoying and offensive jackass.

Early on in my study of constitutional law, I encountered a case that left an indelible mark. In the late 1970s, the National Socialist Party of America (Nazis) wanted to march down main street in Skokie, Ill., a predominantly Jewish neighborhood. The American Civil Liberties Union defended the right of the Nazis to march before the Supreme Court.
