FRYEBURG, Maine — The pilot who died when his plane crashed in the woods near the Eastern Slope Regional Airport last month was attempting to take off for a flight to Moultonborough, according to a National Transportation Safety Board prelominary report. He was moving his plan in anticipation of the temporary closure of the Fryeburg airport through the end of the month.

While the report didn’t identify the man who died in the crash, Dave Cullinan, operations manager confirmed his identity as Walter Schaffner, 74, of Hilton Head, S.C., who kept a hangar at the airport for his Czech Sport Aircraft Supercruiser.
