There are more than 400 distinct cannabinoids found in cannabis, broadly classified into three categories: THC (stimulus), CBD (medicinal) and terpenes (fragrance).

In 2018, Congress approved a comprehensive farm bill that included legalizing cannabis containing no more than three-tenths of one percent delta-9 THC — the cannabinoid most commonly associated with intoxication. This carveout from the DEA’s schedule of controlled substances was named “hemp.” Any other cannabinoids or materials naturally extracted from hemp became likewise legal.
