For two years, voters have supported a moratorium on building hotels. In a recent Tele-Talk, respondents overwhelmingly favored the planning board’s proposal to create a new commercial zone that prohibits buildings larger than 15,000 square feet anywhere except in a tiny stretch of the Route 16 strip. Locals have spoken. They have little public appetite for more commercial development.

But the planners’ proposal to create a new core commercial district is the wrong remedy and regulation overreach the likes Conway has never seen. Its unintended consequences could forever change the fabric of our town and prevent it from maturing in ways most people want.
