The highly publicized vote for the town of Brownfield to accept the maintenance agreement for the Mountain Division Trail was held Thursday evening at the community rec center. The trail, utilizing the Maine portion of the old Mountain Division Railroad corridor that ran from Ogdensburg, N.Y., to Portland, is a recreational trail on the order of the 2.9-mile MWV Rec Path. This path, however, is a state project, and it’s targeted to span 51 miles from Fryeburg to Portland. Segments already built and in use total 10 miles, including the four-mile portion in Fryeburg.
The next segment of the trail to be constructed runs from Fryeburg to Standish, a 31-mile stretch, and the first town on this path is Brownfield. The infrastructure is established, and residents were asked to vote on the town maintenance agreement which, as I understand it, will impact real estate taxes minimally if at all.
