Many people have understandably mixed feelings about the decision of the Memorial Hospital board of trustees to “unify” with the MaineHealth system. As former hospital trustee George Epstein appropriately pointed out, unifications are not truly unifications but are really smaller organizations becoming part of larger organizations.

Memorial Hospital will become an operating unit of MaineHealth and will be an integral part of a $2.1 billion system to provide comprehensive health-care services throughout Southern Maine, Western Maine and East Central New Hampshire.
