New Hampshire may soon penalize people for falsely reporting someone to the Division for Children, Youth, and Families over alleged abuse or neglect.

The New Hampshire Senate passed House Bill 1565 Thursday and sent it to Gov. Kelly Ayotte for final approval. If signed by the governor, the bill will impose misdemeanor criminal penalties on those who knowingly provide false information of suspected child abuse or neglect to the state. It would also open up the false reporter to civil lawsuits from anyone harmed by the report.
