FRYEBURG — When school starts Sept. 1, Maine School Administrative District No. 72's school board's proposed policy regarding classroom celebrations involving junk food still will be in flux, at least for a couple of months.
Last month, MSAD 72 School Board members said they wanted to reduce the amount of "junk food" parents bring into their children's classrooms without resorting to a total ban. At the time, they discussed instituting a proposed policy that said class celebrations should include only one item of low nutritional value, like cupcakes. (What is considered to have minimal nutritional value would be taken from federal guidelines.) Parties featuring food would be limited to one a month. Teachers would maintain sign-up sheets for parents wishing to bring in food.
