Kennett High School held its annual senior awards program on Thursday evening to a full house in Seidenstuecker Gymnasium. This year more than $315,000 in scholarships were awarded along with a laptop computer, a GPS unit and a pair of Limmer Boots to a host of grateful students."It's amazing how much support there is in our community for education," Alenia Miles, director of guidance, who organized the evening, said. "It makes you proud to live here. We had a wonderful evening the event seems to get bigger and bigger every year. I can remember when we first reached $100,000 in scholarships what a milestone that was. Now today, look where we are, again I'd like to thank everyone for their support."One of the new awards unveiled Thursday was the Bill and Esther Levy Scholarship, which went to Hannah Gaschott. The four-year scholarship is based on the current tuition at University of New Hampshire; the recipient is not obligated to attend UNH, but will receive that amount of funding toward post-secondary education. Gaschott will attend Hampshire College in South Amherst, Mass., this fall.Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the first Cindy Chase Award, in memory of the longtime school worker who died from cancer. Her daughter, Jenny, presented the award to Torin Hjelmstad, who has battled leukemia since last year. The emotional presentation garnered a standing ovation and quite a few tears. Also of note on the evening was the presentation of over $110,000 in Farrington Scholarships to a total of 41 students.Students were honored with the following awards and scholarships: Valedictorian Megan OKellySalutatorian Forrest Churchill Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Emily EastmanExcellence in Music Award Alyssa McClureClifford Milliken Jr. Memorial Sportsmanship Award Ben Day and Katelyn QuintMatt Dunn Award for Diligence Sarah WoodWarren Bucknell Award for Courage and Perseverance Torin HjelmstadM.
