CONWAY — Each fall for the past five years, Mount Washington Valley fourth-graders get to experience local ski history firsthand. Thanks to the generosity of the New England Ski Museum and Conway Scenic Railroad, they have been treated to a train ride and re-enactment of Austrian ski great Hannes Schneider’s arrival in February 1939 from Nazi custody to teach skiing at Cranmore. The event is dubbed “In Martha’s Memory” to honor the late Martha Coughlin Corrock (1955-2021), a local ski instructor and former racer who as a fourth-grader, won an essay contest and traveled with fellow local student Kevin O’Sullivan to the Schneiders’ hometown of St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria.

That is followed by a talking session at the North Conway Community Center with ski officials and local Winter Olympians — including Tyler Palmer, now 75, of Kearsarge; Leanne Smith, 38 of Chatham; and 1984 Olympic cross-country skier Sue (Long) Wemyss, 65, of Randolph.
