A Madison man was arrested yesterday for alleged aggravated driving while intoxicated. Police received several calls within minutes of each other yesterday morning reporting that a motorist was "all over the road."Michael Smith, 48, of Maple Grove Road, Madison, was arrested at 8:54 a.m. on West Side Road and transported to the police station for booking."The phone was ringing off the hook with the number of calls we received for a motorists all over the road," Lt. Jeff Dicey said. "A lot of people were obviously concerned by what they saw."According to the police log, at 8:30 a.m., the department received its first phone call, reporting "a gold Trans Am all over the road on Route 16 in Conway by the Kancamagus Highway."Within seconds, the department got a second call the vehicle was crossing the railroad tracks heading into Conway. At 8:35 a.m., the vehicle was reported again. At 8:36 a.m., a female motorist notified police that the Trans Am "passed her headed up Route 16 all over the road behind a truck."At 8:38 a.m., there was a report the vehicle was turning onto Washington Street "headed toward West Side he almost hit a car."Moments later, police stopped the vehicle and charged the driver with aggravated DWI. Police can charge a person with aggravated DWI if they are under the influence of alcohol and their blood alcohol level is above .16 (.08 is the legal blood alcohol level in the state); if they fail to stop for police; or if they are driving at an excessive rate of speed.Smith was bailed from the police station later in the day. Aggravated DWI can carry a fine of up to $500 and loss of driving privileges for up to one year.
