CONWAY — Described by some as the “Cowboy of the Mountains” for his unabashed style, legendary mountain man Al Risch — the colorful, patriotic founder of Friends of Tuckerman Ravine and other non-profit organizations in the area — died Sunday at age 85.

Formerly of Madison, and larger than life in his prime, Risch died Oct. 7 at the Merriman House at Memorial Hospital, where he had lived for the past year during a period of declining health.
