PINKHAM NOTCH — A 19th-century flood, the drowning of a pioneering mountain hotelier and the kindness shown to his widow by a famed congressman and his cousin are all part of the story behind a brooch now being displayed at The Glen House hotel at the base of the Mt. Washington Auto Road.

Anne Cotter, 90, of Intervale, and Howie Wemyss, general manager of the Auto Road and Great Glen Trails, shared the story Monday at the hotel.
