CONWAY — You could say I have been writing this cover story for 50 years — ever since as a fourth-grade student, I heard the good news about my brother, David L. Eastman, then fighting as a 24-year-old Army helicopter aviator in Vietnam.

Per usual, I had walked home from my Portsmouth grade school for lunch, and that’s when my mom told my two sisters and me that Dave — the oldest sibling in our family of eight — was going to be awarded the Silver Star.
