HYANNIS, Mass. — A Cape Cod newspaper has reported that Kenneth Ellis, the Massachusetts man who was shot and killed by a Fryeburg, Maine, police officer on Tuesday night after Ellis reportedly led police on a chase from Conway, the approached officers with a knife, had once been charged with child rape.

The Maine Attorney General is probing Tuesday's fatal shooting after Kenneth Ellis, 52, of Hyannis, Mass., sped across state lines, crashed into multiple vehicles on Main Street in Fryeburg, then reportedly emerged from his black pickup truck with a knife. Fryeburg Officer Michael St. Laurent shot and killed Ellis.
