The growth of backcountry skiing continues as the driving force behind a trend of lighter-weight ski gear across a broad spectrum of equipment for the 2018-19 ski season.

Though backcountry skiers and snowboarders are a fraction of total winter participants, according to a 2017 Snowsports Industries America report — 2 million as compared to 19.4 million skiers and riders — their desire for less bulky and more durable gear with comfort is extremely influential across the industry.
