As Americans, we often take a lot for granted when it comes to energy use: flick a switch and electricity lights the night; turn up a thermostat and a furnace generates heat. Where did this energy come from? Where does it go? Does it matter? Increasingly, we are becoming aware that it does matter — for our environment, for our economy and for our level of anxiety (think Middle East conflicts).
