FREEDOM — The Freedom Historical Society will be welcoming professor W. Jeffrey Bolster on Sept. 20, when he will present “When Shipping Was King: The Piscataqua River in Colonial America” at Freedom Town Hall on Elm St. in Freedom at 7 p.m.

Portsmouth and its satellite towns would have been nothing without shipping in the colonial period. Shipping and shipbuilding dominated the Piscataqua economy for nearly two centuries after initial English settlement, creating wealth, jobs, inequality, identities, and cosmopolitanism.
