The month of August is a good time to search for some of our thieves of the forest. A forest is a complex place, where plants, animals, and fungi exchange energy. Only the fittest organisms will survive the long haul to maturity. At the base of the food chain are the plants, whose ability to synthesize sugars from sunlight allows for our presence on earth. Carbon is the building block of all life and the sugars synthesized through the process of photosynthesis allow trees and plants to store the carbon contained in sugars into complex molecules.
