Fred Sieb, of Hales Location, died on May 11, 2007, at the age of 79. He was born in New York City on November 29, 1927, the son of Johannes and Gretchen (Hadewig) Sieb.It was as a young child visiting the 1939 Worlds Fair in Flushing, N.Y., that his interest in photography began with a Brownie camera.As a high school student, he worked on weekends for AT&T and upon graduating was asked to stay with the company. He was given a position at the test board, attending college at night at Adelphia and then Hofstra in Long Island. A short time later, he was promoted to the Long Lines Department working his way up to the position of Account Manager in charge of IBM Communications over the Long Lines Network.While working for AT&T, he pursued his love of photography both outdoor as well as studio still life and began to market his work to various greeting card companies, and the day came when he had to make a decision to devote full time to this. He resigned from AT&T after 26 years of service.In 1954, he discovered the beauty of the White Mountains and always returned to North Conway on his various trips through New England. It was in 1970 that his love of the area brought him to build a home here near the top of Birch Hill with a magnificent view of the mountains and valley around. In 1997, he and his wife moved to Hales Location Country Club where he was able to enjoy the many friends and neighbors and the beautiful golf course.A man always happy to share his knowledge of the photography business, he has mentored many young photographers and always enjoyed sharing his thoughts with his colleagues throughout the United States, many of whom he met on his photographic trips.His photography has appeared on TV commercials, greeting cards, puzzles, church bulletins, calendars and other publications where a pretty picture is needed.COUNTRY MAGAZINE asked him to write an article titled Gods Country which appeared in the November 1990 issue. Fred Siebs Gods Country was North Conway and the Mount Washington Valley.He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Lillian (Messina) Sieb of Hales Location; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Messina of Westport, Conn., and Roy Messina and his wife Marie of Middletown, N.J. and their children and grandchildren.Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 15 at 10 a.m. at the Furber and White Funeral Home in North Conway with Rev. Tim Roser, officiating. Burial will be in the North Conway Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, May 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
