Swedish vehicles have always had the reputation for being stout and safe. While other European vehicles touted performance or luxury, Saab and Volvo were built like the proverbial brick outhouse — in Saab’s case, a quirky brick outhouse with the ignition switch in the wrong place. Saab exited the automotive scene in 2011 and Volvo, while still maintaining its reputation, has been owned by Chinese conglomerate Geely Holding Group since 2010. Times have changed and it’s not over yet.
Volvo’s “cool” model in the early 1960s was the P1800, and one starred with Roger Moore in his pre-James Bond days on the television series, “The Saint,” about a guy who championed the underdog helping those in dire straits. The P1800 was available as a coupe or P1800ES or “Estate Sedan” a 2 door long-roof wagon known in Europe as a “shooting brake.”
