This is the tale of a European auto manufacturer born of necessity, and ultimately put to death at the hands of mismanagement. Some might call it a Saab story, while others don’t lament the passing of the quirky carmaker.

Saab began in 1937 as Europe struggled with the expanding German state. Weapons were in short supply and, unable to procure military aircraft, Saab was formed. An acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, SAAB translates to English as Swedish Airplane Corporation.
