Henry Ford had some questionable social and political ideals, but there’s no doubt he was a brilliant industrialist and prolific inventor with an eye toward solving problems. We all know what happened when he turned his influence toward the production of the automobile and the refinement of the assembly line. Ford had a similar if lesser known affect on the airplane.

Ford’s first brush with aviation was making Liberty aircraft engines during World War I, which resulted in a deal between Edsel Ford and the Stout Metal Airplane Co. The formation of Ford’s Airport in Dearborn, Mich., followed. The Ford airport was the first to offer limousine service to arriving passengers by Model T bus to Detroit. The airfield also featured one of the first airport hotels when the Dearborn Inn opened in 1931, and still exists today after after a recent renovation.
