Dark Side Contest AnnouncedThe Conway Public Library will once again offer a fall writing contest for grades 5 through 12. With the exception of 2003 when the library was in the throes of construction, Tales from the Dark Side has been offered for young writers since 1990. The guidelines are as follows:Theme: Ghost stories, science fiction, fantasy, or paranormal tales.Format: Title page with name, grade and phone number, plus at least three and not more than 10 pages on 8.5-by-11 paper, double-spaced type, font number 12, or clearly hand-written in ink.Deadline: Friday, Oct. 22, by 5 p.m. Entries can be submitted to the front desk by hand; by mail to CPL, Dark Side, Box 2100, Conway, NH 03818; by fax to (603) 447-6921; or by E-mail to omorrill@conway.lib.nh.us.Prizes: One winner and one runner-up in each of three age categories, grades 5 and 6; grades 7 and 8; and grades 9 through 12. Honorable mentions are awarded at the judges discretion. A certificate of participation will be given to every entrant.Judging: Based on clear plot, effective description and originalityno unnecessary violence or gore.Awards: Monday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. at Conway Library. Winning entries will be read aloud.Please stop by the library during regular hours for a copy of the above rules.Story Telling GuildIn this age of electronics, frenetic lifestyles and consumerism run rampant, the oral tradition of storytelling is needed more than ever. To encourage and preserve this very human form of entertainment and instruction, a fledgling guild of storytellers is forming. Refreshments will be served, and any interested persons are encouraged to attend the next meeting, which will be at the Conway Public Library on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.Focus will be on upcoming events, naming the guild, listening to works in progress and planning programs for the future.
