Spine

A movement-based strategy is key to keeping your spine happy and healthy. (COURTESY IMAGE)

Our spine is our center. It consists of 33 vertebrae, held together with ligaments, separated by spongy discs, supported by muscle and a fascial web, and classified into four distinct areas: cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral. While injuries can happen everywhere in the spine, the cervical spine and lumbar spine are the most susceptible to wear and tear. Our head weighs about 11 pounds (equivalent to a bowling ball). These 11 pounds compress the spine when stacked vertically, however, this influence increases exponentially as we tilt our head off center.

To understand what it takes for our spine and soft tissues to manage our head, one might imagine trying to balance a bowling ball on top of a 6-inch long stick.
