A few years ago, quite a few now to be exact, Tony Joe White had a gritty southern blues tune entitled “Poke Salad Annie.” It was a favorite for us, and a real foot thumper, whenever it was played on our local radio station during the summer of 1969.

We all loved the piece, not only for its great guitar licks and rhythm, but also for its cracker lyrics: “A wicked, straight-razor toting woman” We didn’t care too much that a gator “had got” her granny, either. She sounded like somebody to definitely stay away from.
