CONWAY — Enjoy the sounds of a century of Big Band, jazz (and a few surprises) on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 4 p.m. Bridgton Jazz, an 18-piece ensemble, will play music from the early 1930s to today, in a concert at the Majestic Theatre in Conway Village to benefit Mountain Top Music Center.

Big Band, with its characteristic expansive sound, was popular beginning in the 1930s and developed into a solid genre in the 1940s and 50s. Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw ushered in that era. The genre continued with Count Basie, Maynard Ferguson and Buddy Rich. Today’s big band scene includes Big Phat Band, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and The Airmen of Note.
