It would be easy to by cynical about “A Star is Born,” actor Bradley Cooper’s debut as a director, as it is the third remake of a film dating back to 1937 and is unapologetically romantic. But this is a potent and undeniably powerful film which is deeply affecting in spite of it familiarity.

Late in the film, Sam Elliott, who plays Bobby, the brother and manager to Cooper’s alcoholic musician Jackson Maine, says: “Music is essentially 12 notes between any octave — 12 notes and the octave repeat. It's the same story told over and over, forever. All any artist can offer this world is how they see those 12 notes.”
