The Strawberry Moon ushered in a week of classic summer weather, waxing full on June 29 in a run up to the Fourth of July. Independence Day is a benchmark of the growing season in the Mount Washington Valley, as the fruit and vegetable harvest gets underway in a serious fashion.

Strawberries and new peas are traditional fare to celebrate, and as the old adage goes, the corn should be knee high by the Fourth of July. It has been a struggle to hit that standard in 2026, with its long, cold, wet spring. But conditions turned a corner in mid-June, and with serious heat in the forecast local field crops and gardens have made a quantum leap forward.
