FRYEBURG — The grit and determination of the Fryeburg Academy boys’ basketball team and its willingness to take on all comers is a reflection of the Raiders’ Head Coach Sedge Saunders. That certainly contributed to the selection of Saunders as the Coach of the Year (COY) in Class A earlier this month. Saunders was selected to coach the annual Maine MacDonald's House All-Star Game on March 10 between the top players from Classes AA, A and B South, against the host North stars on the campus of Husson College in Bangor.
Fryeburg reached the Class A quarterfinals this winter with the season coming to an end with a loss to eventual Class A (back-to-back) State champion, Greely Rangers on Feb. 16 at the Portland Expo. The Raiders gave the champs a major scare in that game, closing from a halftime deficit of 36-22 to close within two at 43-41 after three quarters, and hanging within six points with three minutes to go, before falling by a 68-53 final score.
